Copper Marans: The Chocolate Egg Layer
Copper Marans are an exceptional breed known for their dark brown, almost chocolate-colored eggs. Originally from France, these birds have gained popularity worldwide for their rich-colored eggs and their hardy nature. The deeper the egg color, the more prized they are among breeders and poultry keepers. Some even believe that these dark eggs have a richer taste, although that remains a matter of opinion.
The birds themselves are stunning, with deep mahogany feathers highlighted by copper tones, especially in the males. Copper Marans are also known for their calm and friendly personalities, making them great additions to backyard flocks. While they are not the most prolific layers, producing about 150-200 eggs per year, their egg color and overall beauty make them well worth keeping.
If you’re interested in adding Copper Marans to your flock, be sure to provide them with a high-protein diet to maintain their health and egg production. They do well in both free-range and coop settings but, like all chickens, need a clean and predator-proof environment. Their strong, disease-resistant nature makes them a great choice for both novice and experienced chicken keepers.
